Huawei Mate 10 Pro and Porsche Design unveiled with 6" 18:9 AMOLED screens

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro brings the best that tech giant has to offer with the new Leica dual camera and the new AI engine are front and center. Alongside it comes the Porsche Design edition, which builds on the solid hardware with an even more premium exterior.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro has a 6” AMOLED panel with a wider 18:9 ratio. The resolution raises an eyebrow, however. This year’s Pro has FHD+ resolution (that’s 1,080 x 2,160px and 402ppi), last year’s model had QHD (1440 x 2560px, 534ppi).

Anyway, the screen hugs the sides of the phone closely – what Huawei calls the “barely-there-bezel”. Also, it support HDR10 and cover 112% of the NTSC color space for a superior viewing experience.

The new all-glass design of the Mate 10 Pro is beautifully symmetrical with one exception – the reflective band that holds the new dual camera.

Co-developed with Leica, the camera setup has a 12MP color sensor and a 20MP monochrome sensor. The RGB one features Optical Image Stabilization and both of them have equal the brightest aperture on a mobile yet – f/1.6. This is a massive improvement over the f/2.2 aperture of the Mate 9. The new camera will be a force to be reckoned with in the dark.

The software leverages the NPU – the AI-accelerator of the Kirin 970 chipset – to for real-time scene detection (to automatically pick the best settings). AI also enhances the digital zoom and motion detection.

The chipset also brings the first Mali-G72 MP12 graphics to the market. ARM promised a 40% boost in performance over the older G71 GPU. The 10nm process will further enhance the power efficiency of the chip.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro runs the new EMUI 8.0, based on Android 8.0 Oreo. The new Smart Screen function can run two apps on the phone simultaneously or turn the phone into a PC – either mirroring or extending its screen.

All you need to do is hook up a DisplayPort-compatible monitor through the USB-C port. This port is also responsible for charging the 4,000mAh battery as quickly – and safely – as possible. Huawei’s SuperCharge promises a full day’s charge in just 20 minutes. The charger is TÜV Safety Certified to give you a piece of mind.

Speaking of safety, the Mate 10 Pro has IP67 dust and water resistance (up to 1m for 30m), a first for the series. For this or another reason, Huawei cut the 3.5mm audio jack.

The phone has a hybrid dual SIM slot that can house a microSD slot. However, the 128GB of base storage feels plentiful. The Porsche Edition has even more - 256GB. Both come with 6GB of RAM.

These two will be available in mid-November. The Mate 10 Pro will set you back €800 while the premium Porsche Edition is a hair-raising €1,400. Here is the first wave of countries to get Huawei's top dogs:
